Marijuana Arrest: On August 15, 2017 at 2:09 p.m., Ptl. Cesar Hurtado was observing traffic on Route 23 South when he performed a random license plate check on a vehicle and discovered the registration was expired. Ptl. Hurtado stopped the car and made contact with the driver. During their conversation, the officer smelled what he recognized to be the odor of raw marijuana emanating from the interior of the car. After a brief investigation, a small amount of suspected marijuana and a small metal pipe were located. David M. Darmiento, 42 years old from Sparta, was arrested, transported to headquarters and processed. Mr. Darmiento was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving a vehicle with an expired registration. He was released on his own recognizance and has a pending court appearance.
