DWI/Heroin Accident with Arrest: On October 27, 2017 at 3:16 p.m., Ptl. Jack Lyon and several officers responded to the area of Route 23 North between the Newark Pompton Turnpike and the Boulevard to investigate a report of a multi vehicle accident. Upon their arrival, officers learned that three vehicles had been involved in a moderate speed chain reaction crash. Officers rendered medical assistance to the passenger of the first vehicle, who refused further medical assistance. The driver of the second vehicle was treated for momentary loss of consciousness and neck and back injuries by ambulance staff from Atlantic Health. She was transported to Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains. As Ptl. Lyon spoke with the driver of the 1997 Ford Ranger pickup truck that caused the accident, Kyle W. Kerwin, 37 years old from Haskell, he stated that he was not feeling well, began falling asleep and admitted to ingesting heroin just prior to the crash. This driver then proceeded to vomit and lose consciousness. Ambulance personnel on scene administered Narcan and rendered necessary treatment enroute to Chilton Medical Center. Several small envelopes containing suspected heroin were found in the possession of this individual. Mr. Kerwin was charged with aggravated assault with an automobile, possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia, being under the influence of CDS, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, possession of CDS in a motor vehicle and driving with an expired license. During processing it was learned that he was the subject of a non-support warrant out of Passaic County. He was released from our custody and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office was notified.
