Release Date: May 05, 2014

Hazardous Condition:  On May 5, 2014 at 9:57 a.m., police were called to respond to the So Big Child Care Center, located at 620 Route 23 North, to investigate a report of an exhaust odor in the building.  Officers responded to the location along with the Pequannock Fire Department, Pequannock First Aid Squad and various paramedic units.  The building was evacuated due to the strong smell of exhaust and additional resources were requested to respond to the scene to assist in triaging, treating and transporting those affected.  Approximately 90 people were evacuated from the building.  Thirty four children and two adult workers from the day care center were transported to local hospitals with complaints of headaches, nausea and for precautionary purposes.  None of the conditions were serious.   The Morris County Office of Emergency Management coordinated the response of numerous ambulance squads from the area.  Parents and guardians were contacted by the day care center and responded to that location in a calm and orderly manner.  After all those requiring medical attention were treated, the EMS command center was closed at approximately 2:30 p.m.

A preliminary investigation shows the source of the fumes to have come from construction equipment that was being used by a contractor performing interior demolition work in a space adjacent to the day care facility.  The Pequannock Township construction official has issued a stop work order for the building which will remain in effect until the investigative process is complete.  OSHA was contacted by the police department and has opened its own investigation.  The location has been ventilated and is safe to be occupied.  This incident is currently under investigation by the Pequannock Township Police Department, the Pequannock Township Building Department, the Pequannock Township Fire Official and OSHA.  Additional information will be released as appropriate.
