Possession of CDS: On May 28, 2017 at 4:49 p.m., Ptl. Jack Lyon observed a vehicle traveling on Route 23 North with a cracked windshield. Ptl. Lyon also observed the vehicle make several abrupt lane changes. The officer stopped the vehicle and made contact with the operator. During their conversation, the officer observed a bag of syringes on the passenger seat. After a probable cause search of the vehicle, three glassine envelopes containing suspected heroin were located. Paul J. Chlebek, 25 years old from Budd Lake, was arrested, transported to headquarters and processed. Mr. Chlebek was charged with possession of heroin, possession of hypodermic syringes, having a cracked windshield, and driving while suspended. He was released on his own recognizance and has a pending court appearance.
DWI Accident: On May 29, 2017 at 3:05 a.m., Ptl. Kevin Boone was dispatched to respond to a report of a motor vehicle accident on Route 23 North, just prior to the Newark Pompton Turnpike intersection. Ptl. Boone observed that there were two vehicles involved in the accident and learned that one of the vehicles had been traveling south in the northbound lanes when it struck the second vehicle head on. The driver of the vehicle that had been traveling north, had a complaint of pain in his leg and was transported to Chilton Medical Center for treatment. Ptl. Boone spoke with the driver of the vehicle that had been traveling the wrong way on the highway and observed signs consistent with intoxication. After performing several field sobriety tests, Rachel M. Narine, 18 years old from Edison, was arrested at the scene and charged with assault by auto, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, underage driving while intoxicated, violating the provisional license driving hours and driving the wrong way on a highway. She was transported to Chilton Medical Center as a precaution and has a pending court appearance.
DWI Arrest: On May 30, 2017 at 11:17 p.m., Ptl. Matthew Levine observed a vehicle being operated erratically on Route 23. Ptl. Levine stopped the car and made contact with the driver. During their conversation, the officer detected what he recognized to be the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle. The officer also observed that the driver was exhibiting several behaviors consistent with being under the influence of alcohol. After a brief investigation, Robert Malone, 43 years old from Totowa, was arrested, transported to headquarters and processed. Mr. Malone was charged with failure to yield the right of way, careless driving, failure to maintain a lane, and driving while intoxicated. He was released to a third party and has a pending appearance in municipal court.
