DWI Arrest: On September 14, 2017 at 2:03 a.m., Ptl. Jay Hardy of this department and Ptl. Hollenstein of the Riverdale Police Department were in the vicinity of Route 23 North and the Newark-Pompton Turnpike when they simultaneously came upon a vehicle that had run off the roadway and struck a tree. The officers approached the car and found it to be running with the driver asleep. Pt. Hardy was able to gain entry, place the vehicle’s transmission into park and turn off the engine. Officers detected what they recognized to be the odor of an alcoholic beverage inside the car. After performing several field sobriety tests, Joseph F. Connolly, 29 years old from Pequannock, was arrested, transported to headquarters and processed. Mr. Connolly was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and driving while suspended. He was released on his own recognizance and has a pending appearance in municipal court.
