Marijuana Arrest: On Monday, February 26, 2018 at 9:44 a.m., Ptl. Kevin Boone observed a vehicle traveling on Route 23 North with the passenger not wearing a seatbelt. Ptl. Boone stopped the car and made contact with the occupants. During their conversation, the officer observed small flakes of suspected marijuana on the clothing of the passenger and on the car’s floor. It was also learned that the passenger was the subject of an active arrest warrant. After a brief investigation, two small bags of suspected marijuana were located and both occupants were subsequently arrested. Jonathan Velez, 24 years old from Passaic, was charged with failing to wear a seatbelt and possession of under 50 grams of marijuana. Jose A. Urena-Garcia, 27 years old from Passaic, was charged with failure to keep right, driving while suspended and possession of under 50 grams of marijuana. Both individuals were released on their own recognizance and have a pending appearance in municipal court.
DWI Arrest: On Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 9:36 p.m., Ptl. Cesar Hurtado observed a vehicle traveling on the Newark-Pompton Turnpike with two lights that were not functioning. Ptl. Hurtado stopped the vehicle and made contact with the driver. During their conversation, the officer observed several indicators that the driver was impaired. After performing several field sobriety tests, Christopher Morris, 27 years old from Pompton Plains, was arrested, transported to headquarters and processed. Mr. Morris was charged with failing to maintain lamps, driving while intoxicated and being under the influence of CDS. He was released to a third party and has a pending court appearance.
