On June 9, 2018 at 11:19p.m., Ptl. Jack Lyon was monitoring traffic on Route 23 North. At that time he conducted a check of the license plate of a gray Nissan Altima. This check returned an alert for an expired registration, which prompted Ptl. Lyon to make a traffic stop on the vehicle in question. Ptl. Lyon made contact with the driver, later identified as Alfonso Perez, 19 years old of Courtland Manor, N.Y. After a short time, Ptl. Lyon detected an odor of marijuana coming from inside of the car. After a brief investigation, Mr. Perez admitted that he was in possession of a small amount of marijuana and turned over suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia to Ptl. Lyon. A search of the vehicle was done and additional suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found. Mr. Perez was subsequently arrested and transported to the Pequannock Police Department for processing. He was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of drug paraphernalia and expired registration. He was released with a scheduled appearance in the Pequannock Township Municipal Court.
